Short Term Emergency Placements (STEP)

Individualised residential emergency placements for children and young people in statutory out-of-home care with high and complex needs.

Westhaven is proud to offer the STEP program.

This Department of Communities and Justice initiative provides a critical service for young people in need.

The STEP Program:

  • Delivers 13-week emergency placements for children and young people aged 12 to 18.
  • Caters to young people with high and complex needs who require immediate support but are not suitable for traditional foster care, kinship care, or intensive therapeutic care settings.
  • Provides a structured 1:1 care arrangement with trained professionals to ensure each young person receives the individualised attention they need.
  • Offers integrated therapeutic supports to facilitate a smooth transition to a more permanent placement option once identified.

By providing this specialised care, Westhaven assists young people in crisis to stabilise and develop the skills necessary to thrive in a more long-term setting.
